Tomorrow is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, first environmentalist. He lived simply and back to the earth, embraced poverty and lepers. He was a true reformer in his age, and probably would be in ours too. Yet he stayed with God and the Church.
St. Francis, we need you!!

With all due respect to St. Francis, I don't know how well he would be welcomed today. I think too many of us would be quick to pin him a "liberal" due to his pro-environment views. It's like when I hear the phrase "social justice" I get shivers. Not that I'm for "social injustice," but rather that that particular buzzword often implies abortion rights as well.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's what I like about Saint Francis. He stayed with the Church. I think Saint Francis is very needed today, not for some "liberal" political view, but for his living out the gospel in a radical way.
