Book Review--Three Cups of Tea

Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace... One School at a TimeThree Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace... One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin is a book that takes you through one man's journey towards peace. Mortenson loses his way on K2, the second highest mountain in the world, and is saved by Muslim villagers. He is touched by their generosity, especially because of their absolute poverty, and promises to build them a much needed school.

His naive idealism leads him to return to the United States and *type up* 580 letters asking for donations for his project. Thus, his Central Asia Institute begins.

Through 9/11 and the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan, Mortenson builds relationships with the local people and schools for the children.

His focus on spreading peace through literacy (and thus ending the need for and attraction of "schools" run by extremist Muslim groups) is one that can and must be supported by people of all backgrounds.

This book is a good start in knocking down barriers and prejudices and increasing awareness.

  1. Sounds like a good book. Maybe I'll put it on my "to read" list. I still have quite a few books that I've purchased and two from the library to read. Fun hobby, though, eh?
