Think of the Children

To continue my diatribe against our "culture" in general and the media in particular, the Wall Street Journal on line has an excellent editorial by Peggy Noonan entitled, We're Scaring Our Children to Death--Duck-and-cover drills were never this frightening. She begins by describing a horrifically violent mural depicting atrocities against Native Americans by Europeans that is painted on the outside of a wall of a public school--where children will see. The debate, apparently, is centered around the political aspects of this mural. No one has even thought to mention the effect it might have on children.

This question of the effect of violence on children inevitably leads to the media, and television. In response to those who say she should merely "turn the channel" if she finds television content objectionable, she then goes on to talk about what has been on our televisions sets recently:

1. Cho Seung-hui
2. Rappers
3. Rosie
4. Don Imus
5. Missing children
6. The Lancaster, PA murders
7. Global Warming
8. International terrorism
9. And, I would add, details, details, details...about...every sordid thing out there.

This, Noonan says, is what TV in Purgatory will be like.

Because of money, because of politics and because of selfishness, we are creating a world where our children are afraid to live their lives. We will pay for this in the future, I think. We cannot treat our children like this and suffer no consequences.

Hearing the call

Today is Good Shepherd Sunday, the day the Church prays for vocations. The (visiting) priest, who had a "late" vocation himself, warned us of the possibility that some may have a vocation, but the "noise" of the world is getting in the way of hearing Christ's call.

In light of that, and my previous post about cleaning up your mental environment, I think it is even more important for us to find quiet times and places each day for God. Let's be good stewards of the minds that God gave us, and be extra aware of what types of mind pollution we allow in our heads.

Clean up your mental environment!

Check out my new category of links: Mental Environmentalism. I ran across this concept on adbusters and I think it's about time this issue was considered. Our "mental environment" is anything that works its way into our minds during the course of any given day.

Unfortunately, much of this is what corporations of various stripes would like us to see and think about (and to ultimately, buy). The "message" we are getting with increasing frequency is that we are not good enough unless we purchase and consume whatever product happens to be out there. Products that used to be designed to last for decades are now obsolete either physically or technologically, in years or even months. We are conditioned to want (and think we "need") increasing amounts of stuff, and then left to wonder how our homes, minds and lives have become so cluttered.

From a mental health standpoint, this is a serious issue. We have an entire society, now, that has been raised with constant mental distraction 24/7, as a way of life. Not only are we subconsciously told that we do not quite measure up to what we think is "average"--the lie of advertisement--but we are also bombarded with sensationalistic infotainment "news" that does nothing but raise our blood pressure and anxiety level, and feed our paranoia.

I think it is important, in light of this cultural shift, to make sure that what comes into our mental environment is healthy. Saint Paul's admonition to "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17) is even more important now that distractions from the Presence of God are so overwhelming.

We are no longer able to hear God--there are too many frequencies filling our ears. ~Pope Benedict XVI

Gettysburg is teaming with well-behaved, skinny dogs. (It's greyhound weekend.) Our dog, however, is neither skinny, nor well behaved. That's ok, though. Neither are we! :)

Right to Life News

The Catholic News Agency is reporting that The Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority in Great Britain is studying whether or not to allow the creation of a human-animal embryo hybrid as requested by King’s College in London and the University of Newcastle. The apparent purpose of this 99% human, 1% animal, would be to harvest its stem cells at 14 days post conception.

The level of hubris shown by these scientists is sad but not surprising. We have not learned, as a society, to curb our tendencies to build our towers of Babel, thinking we alone can reach the heights of creation.

Healing Prayer at Bedtime

Lord Jesus,
through the power of the Holy Spirit,
go back into my memory as I sleep.
Every hurt that has ever been done to me,
heal that hurt.
Every hurt that I have ever caused
another person, heal that hurt.
All the relationships that have been
damaged in my whole life
that I am not aware of,
heal those relationships.
But, Lord,
if there is anything that I need to do,
If I need to go to a person
because he or she is still suffering
from my hand,
bring to my awareness that person,
I choose to forgive,
and I ask to be forgiven.
Remove whatever bitterness
may be in my heart, Lord,
and fill the empty spaces with your love.
Amen.

I'm beginning to take this personally.

Every time I go to Walmart (well, almost every time) I check in the toy section for Filmore, the green VW bus toy from Disney's "Cars". Apparently, NO ONE (except us old folks) likes this George Carlin-voiced green VW split window bus. I am looking for it for my 50-something year old husband who Loooooooves his VWs. I will find it one day.
(Yeah, for whatever irrational reason, I don't want to buy one on Ebay...go figure!)

Meditation on Luke 12

Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.
~Luke 12:6

Jesus, I trust in You.

Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid.
~Luke 12:7

Jesus, I trust in You.

Do not worry about your life and what you will eat, or about your body and what you will wear.
~Luke 12:22

Jesus, I trust in You.

Notice the ravens: they do not sow or reap; they have neither storehouse nor barn, yet God feeds them. How much more important are you than birds!
~Luke 12:24

Jesus, I trust in You.

Can any of you by worrying add a moment to your lifespan?
~Luke 12:25

Jesus, I trust in You.

If even the smallest things are beyond your control, why are you anxious about the rest?
~Luke 12:26

Jesus, I trust in You.

Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.
~Luke 12:32

Jesus, I trust in You.

Do not worry anymore
~Luke 12:29

A Clarification

In reading over some posts, and being rightfully called on the carpet by some posters, I wanted to clarify the issue of mental illness vs. evil in the VA Tech shootings. Here is my position as clearly as I can explain it.

Evil exists. As a Catholic, I believe that God exists, and, so does evil.

But, as a mental illness advocate and consumer, I firmly believe that mental illness certainly exists and has nothing (in general) to do with evil. Mental illness is a brain disorder and by definition, causes various behaviors.

There are situations where an otherwise "sane" (read, non-mentally ill) person commits horrible atrocities. It is in those situations that it is easiest to see the work of evil.

But, the fact that evil exists, does not, by definition mean that the person committing those horrible acts cannot suffer from mental illness.

Mental illness does not preclude intelligence--it often accompanies it. People who suffer from mental illness are quite capable of planning and forethought in many cases. The fact that an act is planned, does not mean the perpetrator does not suffer from mental illness.

Mental illness is physical and for the most part, treatable.

In trying to balance my belief in the medical model of mental illness with my belief in the existence of evil, I missed the boat. For that, I apologize.

TV Turnoff Week!!!

This week is TV turnoff week. Get rid of passive spoon-fed entertainment in your life this week. Walk. Write. Draw. Cook. Clean(!) Pray.

The little gadget pictured above is called TV B-Gone and is a handy remote that only turns OFF television sets!! This is quite useful when you are in a public place and are made to sit through annoying commercials, or anxiety inducing news programs. How about a little peace and quiet?!

Do we really need to be literally hooked up to media 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?! How about walking (or running, or whatever it is that you do) withOUT the music in your ear the whole time? Listen to nature. Talk to people you see. Talk to the animals that you see.

Put your phone on silent. Leave it home.

Maybe even turn off your computer!

In honor of my newfound status as a weakling cow, I present the following poem:

(Reflections on a Mythic Beast Who's Quite Remarkable, at Least.)

I NEVER saw a Purple Cow;
I never hope to See One;
But I can Tell you, Anyhow,
I'd rather See than Be One.

and this one, by the same author:

The Purple Cow: Suite

Ah, Yes! I Wrote the 'Purple Cow' --
I'm Sorry, now, I Wrote it!
But I can Tell you Anyhow,
I'll Kill you if you Quote it!

Here's why

Marie, over at View from the Pews, has an excellent post on the "why" of the VA Tech tragedy. Basically, there is no "why" without accounting for evil in the equation. Unless the man was truly delusional, she points out, on some level, he chose to do what he did. It was certainly premeditated. It was definitely done without any thought to the identity of the victims.

As I commented to Marie on her blog post, I think I grasped at the mental illness explanation for two reasons. First, it is the label the media is putting out. That is their "why". The fact that the media is saying or implying that his emotional state, or whatever (so far unnamed) medication he may have been on, is responsible for these killings, should not be a reason to embrace that explanation. I rant about the media on here quite enough to have known better.

The second reason I began to embrace the mental illness label though, is one of raw hope. I, like everyone else, want there to be a way of preventing this type of thing from happening in the future. We look for scapegoats. The administration, the police--*someone* should have done something.

Well, someone did do something. Liviu Librescu was a 76 year old engineering professor at Virginia Tech. Long past retirement age, he continued doing what he loved. As a Holocaust survivor, he knew that evil exists and he had the presence of mind to move against it any way he could. Knowing that shootings were taking place in his building, he physically blocked the door to allow students to escape through the window, knowing that the shooter could shoot him through the door, which is exactly what happened. Liviu Librescu is being buried today in Israel.

We have failed as a society

We are failing our mentally ill. The masacre at Virginia Tech and its horrifying aftermath has shown us that, as a society, we are putting the "rights" of people with severe mental illnesses to remain untreated ahead of the safety of our citizenry at large. The pendulum has swung too far and 33 people have paid the ultimate price.

Most people who suffer from mental illnesses are not a danger to themselves or others. Those people have a right to be supported and integrated into society at every level. There are those, however, who shows clear signs of violent tendancies which should never be ignored, especially at the institutional level. There were many incidences where the VA Tech killer showed signs that he was violently unstable and steps should have been taken to keep him away from the college community and to keep weapons out of his hands.

Miraculous News

Fellow Catholic blogger, AutumnRose has gotten the biopsy results back from her recent surgery, and the results are NOT cancerous! What she had is rare, but not a form of cancer.

We all need to thank God for these results!! This is truly miraculous news!!

But I am afflicted and in pain; let your saving help protect me, Oh God,
That I may praise Your name in song and glorify it with thanksgiving.

"See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, take heart!
Let the heavens and the earth sing praise, the seas and whatever moves in them!"

The Feast of Divine Mercy

Humanity's reaction to the actual Presence of God is often one of shocked fear. God's Presence is so far above our own, we hear ourselves say, with Saint Peter,
Leave me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!
~Luke 5:8
But, in this Feast, Jesus calls us to Himself to let the ocean of His Mercy wash us clean and heal us. No matter what our past or present, no matter how lost we are, Jesus is always there to welcome us back.
Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
~Isaiah 1:16
Meditate on the image of Divine Mercy. Jesus is walking towards us. We see one foot in front of the other. Jesus is coming through a doorway. This hearkens back to His message to us from scripture:
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
~Revelation 3:20
Do you, perhaps, have some Rosary beads somewhere and you are not comfortable praying them in the traditional way? Or, have you found yourself attracted to rosary beads when you see them, and don't know why? The Divine Mercy Chaplet can be prayed on regular rosary beads and is very quick and easy to pray.

On the large beads say:
Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

On the small beads say:
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Concluding prayer: (3 times)
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Interesting enough, this final prayer (above) is one of the most ancient of Christian prayers called the Trisagion, which is still said today in the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Divine Liturgies. Trisagion means "thrice holy". Ancient Middle Eastern languages did not have the ability to use superlatives, and therefore, could not describe God as being the "holiest". The "Thrice-holy" prayer that resulted is still said today, and is an excellent prayer to say slowly and to meditate on.

Divine Mercy Novena--Day 9

"Today bring to Me The Souls Who Have Become Lukewarm and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. These souls wound My Heart most painfully. My soul suffered the most dreadful loathing in the Garden of Olives because of lukewarm souls. They were the reason I cried out: 'Father, take this cup away from Me, if it be Your will.' For them the last hope of salvation is to run to My mercy."

Most Compassionate Jesus, You are Compassion Itself. I bring lukewarm souls into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart. In this fire of Your pure love let these tepid souls, who, like corpses, filled You with such deep loathing, be once again set aflame. O Most Compassionate Jesus, exercise the omnipotence of Your mercy and draw them into the very ardor of Your love; and bestow upon them the gift of holy love, for nothing is beyond Your power.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon lukewarm souls who are nonetheless enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. Father of Mercy, I beg You by the bitter Passion of Your Son and by His three-hour agony on the Cross: let them, too, glorify the abyss of Your mercy. Amen

The times, they are a 'changin'!

See how easy this is? A priest with some amount of guts might even be able to make a change like this without having to beg a liturgy committee or parish council first. The text says it took 15 minutes to do.

Divine Mercy Novena--Day 8

"Today bring to Me The Souls Who Are Detained in Purgatory and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames. All these souls are greatly loved by Me. They are making retribution to My justice. It is in your power to bring them relief. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only know the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My justice."

Most Merciful Jesus, You Yourself have said that You desire mercy; so I bring into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls in Purgatory, souls who are very dear to You, and yet who must make retribution to Your justice. May the streams of Blood and Water which gushed forth from Your Heart put out the flames of Purgatory, that there, too, the power of Your mercy may be celebrated.

Eternal Father, turn Your most merciful gaze upon the souls suffering in Purgatory, who are enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. I beg You, by the sorrowful Passion of Jesus Your Son, and by all the bitterness with which His most sacred Soul was flooded, manifest Your mercy to the souls who are under Your just scrutiny. Look upon them in no other way but only through the Wounds of Jesus, Your dearly beloved Son; for we firmly believe that there is no limit to Your goodness and compassion. Amen.

Easter Mass 1941

This is a film from 1941. It was filmed on Easter Sunday at Our Lady of Sorrow's Church in Chicago. The narrator is Fulton J. Sheen. The music alone makes it worth watching. Bishop Sheen's explanation of the Mass is invaluable.

Watch out!

I heard this story on the radio. Apparently, in Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary in Warwickshire England, there is a cockatoo who is fervently guarding her eggs against all possible intruders. The only problem is, they are chocolate Easter eggs!!

Pippa, who is, apparently, a man-hating feminist vampire cockatoo, threw one of the Cadbury Cream eggs at a photographer, and bit the neck of a builder recently. Talk about maternal instinct!

Divine Mercy Novena--Day 7

"Today bring to Me The Souls Who Especially Venerate and Glorify My Mercy and immerse them in My mercy. These souls sorrowed most over my Passion and entered most deeply into My spirit. They are living images of My Compassionate Heart. These souls will shine with a special brightness in the next life. Not one of them will go into the fire of hell. I shall particularly defend each one of them at the hour of death."

Most Merciful Jesus, whose Heart is Love Itself, receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who particularly extol and venerate the greatness of Your Mercy. These souls are mighty with the very power of God Himself. In the midst of all afflictions and adversities they go forward, confident in Your Mercy; and united to You, O Jesus, they carry all mankind on their shoulders. These souls will not be judged severely, but Your mercy will embrace them as they depart from this life.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls who glorify and venerate Your greatest attribute, that of Your fathomless mercy, and who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. These souls are a living Gospel; their hands are full of deeds of mercy and their hearts, overflowing with joy, sing a canticle of mercy to You, O Most High! I beg You O God: Show them Your mercy according to the hope and trust they have placed in You. Let there be accomplished in them the promise of Jesus, who said to them that during their life, but especially at the hour of death, the souls who will venerate this fathomless mercy of His, He Himself, will defend as His glory. Amen.

The key to the current crisis in the Church

I've been wanting to post about this Catholic World News article about the book, "After Aestheticism". The book's premise is that the general lack of spiritual discipline is what fueled the recent clergy abuse crisis, and I think that may very well be the case. I feel like we've dropped the ball, as a culture and as a Church in these postmodern times.

Frankly, I'm less inclined to discuss the particulars of the abuse crisis, as I am to decry the lack of spiritual discipline--the lack of true Catholic spirituality--in the Church today. We have watered down and protestantized so much of our everyday Catholicism that it is barely recognizable. It is common, among many in the Church today to deny the existence of sin, the uniqueness of the Church and even the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
Driving the development of the ascetical tradition was a religious culture of hope and love-- hope that one can genuinely train his or her spiritually destructive passions, and the expectation that the meek and merciful would achieve a love of Jesus Christ. It was the ascetical discipline that in no small measure protected the early Church from the onslaughts of pagan sexuality, and indeed, contributed mightily to the development of Christian culture.

Because the purpose of religion has changed, this ancient understanding of the ascetical tradition has faded in the Catholic Church.

We have "sold out" to postmodern culture. The Church is no longer influencing the culture. The culture is influencing the Church.
Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
~ Matthew 7:13

Divine Mercy Novena--Day 6

"Today bring to Me The Meek and Humble Souls and the Souls of Little Children and immerse them in My mercy. These souls most closely resemble My Heart. They strengthened Me during My bitter agony. I saw them as earthly Angels who will keep vigil at My altars. I pour out upon them whole torrents of grace. Only the humble soul is capable of receiving My grace I favor humble souls with My confidence."

Most Merciful Jesus,
You Yourself have said, "Learn from Me for I am meek and humble of heart." Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart all meek and humble souls and the souls of little children. These souls send all heaven into ecstasy, and they are the heavenly Father's favorites. They are a sweet-smelling bouquet before the throne of God; God Himself takes delight in their fragrance. These souls have a permanent abode in Your Most Compassionate Heart, O Jesus, and they unceasingly sing out a hymn of love and mercy.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon meek souls, upon humble souls and upon little children, who are enfolded in the abode of the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. These souls bear the closest resemblance to Your Son. Their fragrance rises from the earth and reaches Your very throne. Father of mercy and of all goodness, I beg You by the love You bear these souls and by the delight you take in them: Bless the whole world, that all souls together may sing out the praises of Your mercy for endless ages. Amen.

Divine Mercy Novena--Day 5

"Today bring to Me the Souls of those who have separated themselves from My Church and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. During My bitter Passion they tore at My Body and Heart, that is My Church. As they return to unity with the Church My wounds heal and in this way they alleviate My Passion."

Most Merciful Jesus, Goodness Itself, You do not refuse light to those who seek it of You. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Church. Draw them by Your light into the unity of the Church, and do not let them escape from the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart; but bring it about that they, too, come to glorify the generosity of Your mercy.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Son's Church, who have squandered Your blessings and misused Your graces obstinately persisting in their errors. Do not look upon their errors, but upon the love of Your Own Son and upon His bitter Passion, which He underwent for their sake, since they, too, are enclosed in His Most Compassionate Heart. Bring it about that they also may glorify Your great mercy for endless ages. Amen.

"Today bring to Me Those Who Do Not Believe In God and Those Who Do Not Yet Know Me. I was thinking also of them during My bitter Passion, and their future zeal comforted My heart. Immerse them in the ocean of My mercy."

Most Compassionate Jesus
, You are the Light of the whole world. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who do not believe in God and of those who as yet do not know You. Let the rays of Your grace enlighten them that they, too, together with us, may extol Your wonderful mercy; and do not let them escape from the abode which is Your Most Compassionate Heart.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who do not believe in You, and of those who as yet do not know You, but who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. Draw them to the light of the Gospel. These souls do not know what great happiness it is to love You. Grant that they, too, may extol the generosity of Your mercy for endless ages. Amen.

Divine Mercy Novena--Day3

"Today bring to Me All Devout and Faithful Souls and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. These souls brought Me consolation on the Way of the Cross. They were that drop of consolation in the midst of an ocean of bitterness."

Most Merciful Jesus
, from the treasury of Your mercy, You impart Your graces in the great abundance to each and all. Receive us into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart and never let us escape from It. We beg this of You by that most wondrous love for the heavenly Father with which Your Heart burns so fiercely.

Eternal Father, turn Your Merciful gaze upon faithful souls, as upon the inheritance of Your Son. For the sake of His Sorrowful Passion, grant them Your blessing and surround them with Your constant protection. Thus may they never fail in love or lose the treasure of the holy faith, but rather, with all the hosts of Angels and Saints, may they glorify Your boundless mercy for endless ages. Amen.
