Easter Nostalgia

Things that used to be part of Easter that I just don't see anymore:

1) Women wearing Easter hats
2) Women getting Easter corsages
3) People buying new clothes for Easter
4) People dressing up for Easter
4) A crowded Easter Vigil Mass

In my circle of experience, none of this occurs anymore and, it makes me a bit sad.

As a child, my mom would get us new Easter dresses, complete with hats, gloves and patten leather shoes, every Easter, to be worn to church for the rest of the year.

Husbands would buy their wives corsages to wear on Easter morning.  The world would explode in a rebirth of color.  Easter was truly something special in the wider culture.

I'm beginning to take this personally.

Every time I go to Walmart (well, almost every time) I check in the toy section for Filmore, the green VW bus toy from Disney's "Cars". Apparently, NO ONE (except us old folks) likes this George Carlin-voiced green VW split window bus. I am looking for it for my 50-something year old husband who Loooooooves his VWs. I will find it one day.
(Yeah, for whatever irrational reason, I don't want to buy one on Ebay...go figure!)

And the beat goes on...

Interesting and sad statistic I heard today: the most common age for death by drug overdose is now around 45 according to The Office of National Drug Control . How sad is that? One more indicator that my generation is continuing its downward spiral that began 40 or so years ago.

A man reaps what he sows.
~Galatians 6:7

We in our generation have sown much that needs to be weeded out. We raised the banner of "if it feels good, do it" and it is continuing to kill us. It is sad that at the age when many of our forebearers (and offspring) were and are fighting for the freedom of their country and raising new families on next to nothing, we were "turning on, tuning in and dropping out".

The fact that many of us are now dying of drug overdoses says a lot about our unformed consciences and our lack of ability to cope. It is an indication that all of us need something outside of ourselves to focus on and work towards, for the inevidable death we will reap is not merely a physical one. And, no matter what our personal situations, we have something--Someone--outside ourselves--God. God is love. He is also justice. He will not be mocked.
For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, "They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways."
~Psalm 95:10
Everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must render an account.
~Hebrews 4

The end is near!

In light of today's Apocolyptic readings, I wanted to summarize the homily I heard this morning.

There are clear signs of the end times if we pay attention to them. What are those signs? Things such as:

1. Grey hair
2. Aches and pains
3. Failing memory
4. Not being able to do what you used to.

Be aware of these signs. The end *is* near--for all of us as individuals.
What to do? Turn to Christ.

You know you're old when...

I was flipping through the TV stations today and saw about 5 seconds of Sesame Street. They were doing the letter L. They showed the letter L on a CELL PHONE.

When my own son used to watch Sesame Street, it never had anything on there about cell phones or computers.

So, now, not only am *I* "old" but so is my 18 year old son!?!
