I'm going to go ahead and weigh in on the Star Jones/Barbara Walters controversy. Frankly, I'm surprised at Barbara Walters' behavior. She has been in the broadcasting business for longer than I have been alive. I would have expected her to rise above the fray and act like the professional she is rather than stooping to the level of tabloid journalism by joining in the "cat fight" that is now being aired across the country.
Any statement made by her "side" should have been made by the network and Barbara should have stayed well out of it.

New Links!!
Thanks to Recta Ratio, I have discovered a new family of blogs that I am very excited about. The main hub is called Faith of the Fathers. They are a multi-blog site which focuses on various aspects of Catholicism.
I have a few of their sites saved on my sidebar, including Approved Apparitions, Our Lady, and Spirituality and Mysticism. All three of these subjects have been both sorely neglected and misrepresented in recent decades and I am grateful to the sites' contributors, Steve, Marie, Ginny and Emmy for their contributions to Catholic Education on the net.
My other new link, from Deus in Adiutorium is Prier Dieu, a beautiful French Language prayer site, complete with photographs to accompany the prayers. Stop by for a bit of prayer and meditation.

Flooding
Please pray for all those affected by the recent flooding in the mid-Atlantic United States. Pray, especially for those who have lost their lives as a result.
And, please, if you live in an affected area, do not venture out near overflowing streams or other bodies of water. Also, do not drive through puddles unless you are sure of the depth.

Nicole Kidman lives her values
Frequent reader, MK, has reminded me to post on the marriage of Nicole Kidman over the weekend. MK has rightly pointed out that by choosing the Church over Scientology, Kidman has come back to her roots and the religion of her family and thus, illustrates her value system.
I made a similar choice myself about 13 years ago when I realized, after some trying life experiences, that God, and the Church are all that I really have in life. Everything else can change in an instant.
God is eternal.
His Love is always there.

Respect for the aged
DS observed something about the technology of my generation the other day:
Records are cool.
You get to turn them over
and play even more music.

Family Adopts 6 siblings from Russia
Last night, Dateline reported on the Salems--a Franconia Township, PA couple who decided to adopt fraternal twin babies from Russia. After learning that the children had 4 older siblings, twin boys and twin girls, still in Russia, they decided to find the children, go back, and adopt them as well.
The remaining siblings had been recently taken away from their biological parents and subsequently separated, the girls going to an orphanage and the boys going to a "boarding school" without running water. All four children were living in deplorable conditions in Russia.
The Salems traveled to Russia to meet the children and tell them that they were wanted, loved and would be adopted and taken to America. The courts approved the adoption after the most reticent of the children, Sergei, stood up and told the judge: "I wanna be with my brothers and sisters. I want this mommy and daddy."
The entire transcript of the program is here.
Needless to say, the Salems are in a tight financial situation since the adoption. To help the Salem family, a fund has been set up.

To your health!
Science Daily reports that green tea may be even more effective against cancer than first thought.
Green tea's ability to fight cancer is even more potent and varied than scientists suspected, say researchers who have discovered that chemicals in green tea shut down one of the key molecules that tobacco relies upon to cause cancer.
Hmmm....I might have to encourage dh to drink green tea. Maybe I'll try some green tea recipes.

Solemnity of the Sacred Heart
Today is the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I've come to a renewed faith in the Sacred Heart as manifested through the Holy Eucharist and the Mass. In truth, there is a miracle taking place every day in the Mass. Jesus is becoming present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity and waiting for us to receive Him, spend time with Him, and worship Him. He is there on the altar, in the Tabernacle, each and every day and night, waiting to envelope us in the Love that emminates from His Sacred Heart. It is so easy to do, really.
It's free.
His Love is free.

St. Thomas More (1478-1535)
Today is the Feast of St. Thomas More. He was Lord Chancellor of England under Henry VIII and he opposed King Henry's attempt to divorce his first wife and declare himself the head of the Church of England. For that, he was beheaded.
Would we be willing to do the same? Do you think that it could never happen in modern times? I can easily forsee a scenario where Christians would be persecuted by governments, even "democratic" ones, for their beliefs. Anti-Catholicism is the last acceptable predjudice in many quarters. How many of us can withstand it?
St. Thomas More, pray for us!

You mean they *are* people?!
This entire story on CitizenLink is worth going to and reading.
Ted Harvey, assistant minority leader in the Colorado House of Representatives was troubled by a pending vote in that House to honor the 90 year legacy of Planned Parenthood and wondered what he could do about it.
He discovered that Gianna Jessen was in town and asked her to come to be recognized on the floor of the Colorado House. She agreed.
Once there, he told her story of overcoming the physical limitations of her Cerebral Palsy by physical therapy, leg braces, a walker, and later, a personal trainer. She went on to run a marathon.
The House chamber "exploded into applause which lasted for 15-to-20 seconds. Gianna had touched their souls. Ironically, Alice Madden, the majority leader and sponsor of the Planned Parenthood resolution, walked over to Gianna and congratulated her."
Mr. Harvey then went on to tell, as he put it, "the rest of the story." In Gianna's particular case, her CP was caused by a failed late-term abortion performed on her then 17 year old mother by Planned Parenthood. She was born alive and adopted at the age of 4.
The speaker banged the gavel, saying, "Representative Harvey, I will allow you to continue your introduction, but not for the purposes of debating a measure now pending before the House."
Mr. Harvey replied, "Mr. Speaker, I understand. I just wanted to put a face to what we are celebrating today."
Then, he reports,
The House Majority Leader was all too willing to congratulate an inspirational woman with CP, "but was outraged when she discovered that the person she congratulated was also an abortion survivor."
Apparently, for some people, that changes everything.

Another June British Birthday
Besides being Paul McCartney's 64th birthday this past weekend was the "official" birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, who turned 80 years old. She actually turned 80 on April 21, but officially celebrates her birthday on a chosen weekend in June.
Christened Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, she suceeded her father King George VI to the throne on February 6, 1952 at the age of 25. During her first official trip overseas for her 21st birthday, she promised the British people, "...that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service..."
I think she is, perhaps, one of the few royals in recent memory to have kept that promise.
Hat tips to Recta Ratio.

When I'm Sixty-Four
Everyone's favorite Beatle turned 64 yesterday. In honor of Paul McCartney's 64th birthday, I'd like to post the lyrics of the now-famous song--one of my favorites by the Beatles.
The fact that Paul wrote this song when still a teenager, says a lot about his values, personality and talent.
When I'm Sixty-Four
When I get older losing my hair
many years from now
will you still be sending me a valentine
birthday greeting, bottle of wine
If I'd been out till quarter to three
would you lock the door
Will you still need me
Will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four
You'll be older too
And if you say the word
I could stay with you
I could be handy mending a fuse
when your lights have gone
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings, go for a ride
Doing the garden, digging the weeds
Who could ask for more
Will you still need me
Will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four
Every summer we can rent a cottage on the
Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck, and Dave
Send me a postcard, drop me a line
stating point of view
indicate precisely what you mean to say
yours sincerely wasting away
Give me your answer fill in a form
mine forever more
Will you still need me
Will you still feed me

Modern Supernatural phenomena
I'm going to go out on a limb here and risk having it chopped off.
I want to begin by stating that I have a great devotion to Our Lady, the Rosary, and a couple of (Church approved) apparitions, including the Sacred Heart and Divine Mercy. The idea that Our Lord died on the cross for us, and that He, as God, "volunteered", as it were, to come and suffer the most humiliating death, knowing that a portion of humanity would STILL reject Him, is mind boggling. The idea that we all have until the final moments of our lives to turn to Him and accept His great love for us, and that, no matter what we have ever done, that Jesus is still ready to embrace us with His love, is hard for the human mind to comprehend.
For the past few years, I have experienced a lot of inner conflict regarding some modern "apparitions". At first, I was thrilled that Our Lady could still possibly appear in these modern, post Vatican II times, when many of us in the Church have literally been told "these things don't happen any more". But they do, or at least they can, I'm convinced of that.
But having experienced first hand the unreserved enthusiasm that some have for several ongoing "apparitions", I have begun to exercise caution. There are some, who, in an effort to strengthen their faith, ingest copious amounts of "prophesies" each day from "visionaries" that are unapproved, and in some cases, specifically disapproved by the local bishop where the so-called visions take place.
In a letter from the Secretary of the Doctrinal Congregation, Archbishop Bertone, to a French bishop in 1996, it was pointed out that while individual people are free to travel to Medjugorje in the former Yugoslavia, where it is reported that the Virgin has been appearing to 6 children (now adults) since 1981, such pilgrimages "are permitted on condition that they are not regarded as an authentication of events still taking place and which still call for an examination by the Church."
In light of this, it saddens me that my own parish has decided to commemorate the anniversary of the happenings at Medjugorje, which takes place on June 24, instead of a parish-wide celebration the Feast of the Sacred Heart, which is on June 23rd. To me, this gives the faithful the distinct impression that the goings on in the former Yugoslavia are indeed presently sanctioned by the Church, which they are not.
I believe that some of these modern paranormal phenomena are distracting people from Truth and that, indeed, may be their intended supernatural purpose.

Lavender Festival
I went to the Lavender Festival in nearby Fairfield today. It was fun. I wanted to buy everything I saw. I did buy some pick-your-own lavender to dry and perhaps use for my upcoming marriage blessing. I also got some lavender/mint iced tea blend which I look forward to using, perhaps on the same occasion.
Lavender is truly one of God's gifts to us!

New Mass Translation Approved!!
Fantastic article in Catholic Insight on the new Mass translation. It goes into detail I have not seen before. So much of the original Latin is being translated correctly this time.
For example, Et cum spiritu tuo, will be correctly translated as "And with your spirit" instead of "And also with you." Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa, will become "through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault" and not "through my own fault." Ecce Agnus Dei is now correctly translated as "Behold the Lamb of God" instead of "This is the Lamb of God."
From these few examples alone, one can immediately see the solemnity that will be restored to the Mass via these more accurate translations. It seems to highlight the fact that the Mass is not just a communal meal where we pat ourselves on the back and tell each other how good we are doing, but a re-presentation of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross (hence the term, "sacrifice of the Mass") where Christ becomes truly present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in Holy Communion.
Deo Gratias!! Thanks be to God!!!

The Serpent
The Lion and the Cardinal has a really cool post on the serpent, which is the precursor of the brass instrument, the euphonium. The only reason I know anything about the serpent is from an in-class presentation dh did in college on the history of his major instrument, the euphonium.
Given the fact that I was the only non-music major in the class, my presentation, for those of you waiting on the edge of your seat, was on the voice, which, in my opinion, is the instrument we are each given by God.
For any of you who are the least bit interested (and I know there must be millions of you out there!) visit Douglas Yeo's serpent photo gallery. This guy actually plays serpents and is involved in all kinds of serpent organizations.
The above pic is from the Musical Instrument Museum in Brussles, Belgium. If I had known something as cool as a serpent chandelier was in Brussles while I was there last year, I certainly would have gone and seen it!

The Cult of the Body
Catechism #2289
If morality requires respect for the life of the body, it does not make it an absolute value. It rejects a neo-pagan notion that tends to promote the cult of the body, to sacrifice everything for it's sake, to idolize physical perfection and success at sports. By its selective preference of the strong over the weak, such a conception can lead to the perversion of human relationships.
I think the "cult of the body" describes a lot about what is wrong with today's society and serves only to perpetuate the culture of death.

USCCB meets to decide on new Mass translation
On June 15-17 the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops meets in Los Angeles to vote on, among other things, extending the collection of funds for retired religious and the new translation for the Mass. England, Scotland, Wales and Australia have already voted in favor of the new translation.
The change that intrigues me most, is the rendering of "and also with you" to become "and with your spirit" which is closer to the Latin. As a revert from "high" Episcopalianism, that change will bring back some good linguistic memories for me.
One I know dh won't like is the change of "protect us from all anxiety" to "saved from all distress". Well, I remember when it was "shelter us from all turmoil" and I guess we can't let those with anxiety disorders get all the prayers! ;)
In addition to proposed changes, there are apparently some amendments particular to the church in the U.S. which must be approved by the Vatican before they go into affect. These include alternate introductions for the Penitential Rite and the Lord's Prayer, as well as officializing the Memorial Acclamation, "Christ has died, Christ is Risen, Christ will come again," which is still not in the International Committee for English in the Liturgy's official text and "for you and for all" instead of "for you and for all men" as it technically still reads now.
I would like to ask everyone to keep the USCCB in your prayers.

Fish Eaters
The site Fish Eaters has an interesting Fun Stuff page. One that I tried is "Saints and Their Symbols" matching game. I got 70% on the first try.
They also have an interesting list of Catholic Movies. How many have you seen?
The Ten Commandments (1956)*
Jesus of Nazareth (1977)*
The Passion of The Christ (2004)*
Spartacus (1960)
Quo Vadis? (1951)
Becket (1964)
Joan of Arc (1948)
The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
A Man for All Seasons (1966)*
The Song of Bernadette (1943)*
Thérèse (1986)
The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima (1952)
The Exorcist (1973)
The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
Their other list is of "films with a Catholic sense of the world".
Meet John Doe (1941)
It's a Wonderful Life (1946)*
I Confess (1953)
Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)
The Dead (1987)
On the Waterfront (1954)
The starred movies are the ones I have seen. I don't think I could ever bring myself to watch either Exorcism movies. I really liked The 10 Commandments, Jesus of Nazareth & The Passion of the Christ. Definately worth renting/buying.

The Feast of the Holy Trinity
Holy, holy, holy
Lord God Almighty
Early in the morning
my song shall rise to Thee.
Holy, holy holy
Merciful and mighty.
God in Three Persons
Blessed Trinity
Today is Trinity Sunday--The Feast of the Holy Trinity. Christians believe in Three Persons in One God, and in Trinitarian Baptism
Go therefore, and teach all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. One way to honor the Holy Trinity is to use the Sign of the Cross more frequently. Use it before and after prayer, before meals, and when receiving the Body and Blood of Christ.

Some thoughts on pride
I came across a very telling article on the Pride.
It is said that pride is the root of all sin and can take many, often unrecognizable forms.
Pride can disguise itself as plain old self-centeredness which sometimes shows itself in being easily offended. Or it can be an obvious sense of superiority which shows itself in being overly critical.
On the other hand, pride can also manifest itself as self-pity and oversensitiveness which leads the person to resentment and anger.
Ambition can be a form of pride leading to such things as flattery and hypocrisy in an effort to "get ahead".
Spiritual vanity is a dangerous form of pride for those of us who are trying to follow God's way. If you find yourself being cynical of others and diminishing your own sins it may be spiritual vanity that is getting in your way.
Pride can also be embodied in two seemingly opposite traits--boastfulness, which is a feeling that others are inferior, and timidity where we are fearful of others’ opinions and cater to human respect rather than union with God.
When life gets difficult for "no reason", pride is such a far-reaching vice, that it bears looking at as a possible area of growth.

PA Puppy Mills
There just may be a light at the end of the long, dark tunnel of Pennsylvania puppy mills. In puppy mills, breeding dogs for profit takes the place of breeding for health and temperament. Dogs are often kept in crowded conditions and not well socialized. Pennsylvania puppy mills are some of the worst in the nation, with the largest concentration being in Lancaster County. Thankfully, Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell has made an important first step by dismissing members of the Pennsylvania Law Advisory Board. Click on this link to sign a petition thanking Governor Rendell for cracking down on the puppy mill industry.
An article in Philly.com states that PA is considered the "puppy-mill capital of the East" and that Rendell wanted to tackle the "quarter-century-old problem." Well, I can tell you from personal experience that the problem has been going on for much longer than that and it is high time it is stopped. The article states that "Animals bred in puppy mills are sold to pet shops throughout the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, while adult dogs used for breeding are often housed for their entire lives in tiny wire cages stacked on top of each other." That alone is reason enough to get your beloved pets from rescue organizations and NOT from pet stores and certainly not from disreputable backyard breeders.
The Department of Agriculture recently proposed changes to the laws requiring breeders to provide housing for animals with a roof and 4 sides, clean, dry bedding and "adequate protection from the cold and heat". If basics such as this need to be articulated in a law, think of what that means about the current state of dog breeding.
Please support your local SPCA and other animal welfare organizations.
Thanks to Dog Bytes forum on Delphi for alerting me to this issue.

Some Thoughts on the Holy Spirit for the Feast of Pentecost
Today is the Feast of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit is that nebulous part of the Trinity that is sometimes difficult to understand. Nevertheless, the Church teaches that each of us is given the Holy Spirit when we are baptized. We each have access to the Holy Spirit's comfort and His gifts--even those of us who are not necessarily Charismatic or Pentecostal. We can pray to this often-neglected third member of the Holy Trinity and ask for His help in our daily lives.
One thing the Holy Spirit can help us with is acquiring the virtues necessary to live out our Christian vocation. No wonder the Sacrament of Confirmation is viewed as the Catholic's entry into the life of adult faith. The 12 Fruits and the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit I've listed the below are a good indication of a person's Christian maturity.
Fruits of the Holy Spirit
1. Charity
2. Joy
3. Peace
4. Patience
5. Benignity
6. Goodness
7. Long-suffering (patient suffering over an extended period)
8. Mildness
9. Faith
10. Modesty
11. Continency
12. Chastity
Gifts of the Holy Spirit
1. Wisdom - desire for the things of God, and to direct our whole life and all our actions to His honor and glory
2. Understanding - enable us to know more clearly the mysteries of faith
3. Counsel - warn us of the deceits of the devil, and of the dangers to salvation
4. Fortitude - strengthen us to do the will of God in all things
5. Knowledge - enable us to discover the will of God in all things
6. Piety - love God as a Father, and obey Him because we love Him
7. Fear of the Lord - have a dread of sin and fear of offending God

Graduation
The long awaited day has come and gone. DS graduated from high school last night. Quite a long way from the 2 year old volunteering to take the baby Jesus (a teddy bear wrapped in a blanket) up the aisle at his day care Christmas program. We knew even then, it would go by in a flash, and it did.
Congratulations!
Congratulations!
And he that throws not up his cap for joy
Shall for the fault make forfeit of his head.
