Feast of Saint Blaise

We got our throats blessed today after the intercessions at Mass. DH, a fairly recent convert, got his blessed for the first time ever. It was Fr. Robert's first time blessing throats as he is a new priest.

In case you didn't know, the blessing of the throats, and the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday are two things that anyone can participate in because they are not sacraments.

Feast of St. Blaise

Today is the feast of St. Blaise. He was a physician and bishop in Armenia in the second century. He was arrested for being a Christian after being discovered in prayer. On the way to prison, he prayed over a child who was choking on a fish bone. The child was healed.

From this, grew the custom of the blessing of the throats on his feast day, February 3.

How common is this custom today? Do any of your pastors bless throats either on this day, or on the Sunday nearest to the feast day? I know some otherwise reluctant priests will bless throats if the parishioners ask for it to be done.

The priest places 2 crossed candles on the throat of each person and says this prayer:

Through the intercession of Saint Blase, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit.

I was very grateful to get my throat blessed because, although my surgery will be on my spine, the incision will be in the front and the area that will hurt the most post-op will be my throat.
