For a very special intention

Please pray for my family as we go through the difficult decisions that come with caring for my 81 year old mom and aunt. There will be pain regardless of how it turns out.

Why Church?

Do you vote? Do you long for a better government? Do you think our country could use a better, more centralized transportation system? What about more universal health care coverage? Do you wish education were excellent across the board?

Without institutions, none of these changes could take place.

And yet, when it comes to religion--that in itself is a "dirty word" among many who call themselves "spiritual"--the idea of an "institution" is akin to the deliberate pollution of pristine waterways. It feels, to many, repugnant.
...the phrase “institutionalized religion” is so often used as a criticism...Yet it’s not a term we seem inclined to adopt as a criticism in other contexts. Few people would prefer we got rid of institutionalized health care or envision a world without institutionalized transportation. Whatever we do with more than a few people requires structures.

In the social structure of the Church, a huge network of local communities is held together in unity, each community helping the others and all sharing a common task while each provides a specific place to recognize and bless the main events in life from birth to burial.

~Touchstone Magazine--Rest for Our Souls: Confession in an Age of Self-Esteem by Jim Forest
Without institutions, society is adrift. Without an institution to guide us spiritually, we are each left to our own devices, to wander alone, without any connection to like minded people, except in the sense that we are all doing "our own thing."

That would be horrifying if it took place within our system of government. Without a governing institution, common laws would be impossible. Without laws, our entire society would cease to function.

When we have a "society"--a group of people destined to live together--we must have groups--institutions--for the common good. The very definition of society is that of people living together.

When it comes to spirituality, mankind was created to live in society. In order to propagate the species, we must come together and try to live in harmony with each other. We must agree upon common goals to raise our families.

The Church is a necessary institution given to us by Christ to help us learn to grow in faith. Much of that growth involves our relationships with our fellow human beings.

Spiritual growth can not be done in a vacuum. Spiritual growth can not be done alone. It is not just between us and God. It is not about us "feeling" good about ourselves.

Life is about how we relate to each other. Religion is about how we relate to each other and to God. It is about holding ourselves accountable for our actions and living as God would have us live.

Feast of Saints Peter and Paul

Today is the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. I love this icon of Peter and Paul embracing. It makes me long for the day when The Church will indeed "breathe with both lungs" as Pope John Paul II prayed for so fervently.

Peter and Paul encompass both sides of the Christian walk. Saint Paul was literally "knocked off his horse" on the road to Damascus. He was on his way to Damascus to persecute and kill members of the early Church, when he was knocked over by a blinding light and spoken to by the Risen Christ.

Paul represents the intense conversion experiences that many have where God gives them the grace to turn their backs on lives of notorious sin and failing. The intensity of experiences like this strengthen and impart zeal for Christ.

Peter, on the other hand, is, seemingly, quite ordinary. He was a fisherman with an impulsive personality. He was publicly reprimanded by Christ. He was even called "Satan". He denied Christ three times, even after being warned ahead of time.

I can just sense, by reading scripture, how much Peter struggled. How many times he fell, over and over and over again, even while walking in the very Presence of Christ Himself! He "wept bitterly" for his sins. And Christ forgave him. Christ asked Him three times, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?" Jesus gave Peter the opportunity to repent and make direct amends for denying Him.

Let us pray for unity and for endurance to finish the race with Christ and His Church.

Iced Tea

Now that summer is here in full force, check out Iced Tea Hound's iced tea recipes. Mmmmmmmmmm!

Here is a recipe for mint iced tea from Paula Deen on the Food Network:

1 quart water
4 family size tea bags (recommended: Luzzienne)
2 cups sugar
1 bunch mint leaves
1 lemon, slices for garnish

In a large pot bring the water to a boil. Remove pot from heat, add the tea bags, cover with a lid, and allow tea to steep in water for 20 minutes. Take a 1 gallon jug and pour the sugar into the jug and cover with some hot tap water. Stir the sugar around to dissolve while the tea is steeping. Once the tea has steeped, remove the lid and the tea bags. Pour the tea into the jug with the sugar, stir, and place the tea bags back into the jug. Stir the tea well, making sure the sugar dissolves. Fill the jug with cold water to yield 1 gallon.

To serve, pour each glass of tea and garnish with a slice of lemon and mint leaves.

Apologetics101 YouTube Channel

I wanted to point out a very useful YouTube channel. Apologetics101 is a channel that has many useful lectures on Christian apologetics. It is a very spiritually "meaty" channel. At this moment, I am listening to C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity. A book I've always meant to read and now I can "read" it aurally. I'll post the first part of the book here, which is basically an introduction.

Russert's Rainbow

I've replaced the former video with one that is related and, hopefully, will remain available.

Russert's son Luke reacted to the event in a way that would have made his dad proud.

When probed for his thoughts about the way in which the rainbow emerged with such perfect timing, Luke grinned in the same familiar manner that Tim did each Sunday.

Luke then asked, "Is anyone still an atheist now?" ~Newsmax.com

RIP George Carlin

Seventy-one year old George Carlin has died of heart failure.

Known for pushing the envelope of the FCC, Carlin's routine got him arrested in 1972 for disturbing the peace, and went all the way to the Supreme Court. So, he either blazed the trail, or ushered in the fall of Western Civilization, whichever perspective you care to take.

More recently, he played Filmore the green Volkswagen bus on Disney's Cars.

In what I will always see as an amazingly ironic twist, Carlin became known to the children and grandchildren of some of his original fans, as Mr. Conductor in the PBS children's series Shining Time Station, of Thomas the Tank Engine fame. He wasn't the original Mr. Conductor, though. That was Ringo Starr.

Rest in peace, George Carlin.

Yes, I Have a Purple Cast

By popular demand, I have FINALLY managed to get a picture of my purple cast for your viewing pleasure. It does look blue next to the burgundy pillow it is resting on, but I'll leave the naming of the specific shade to my readers.

What do you think?

English Majors of the World--Unite!!!!!!

In spite of my frequent inability to spell properly, I got a real kick out of this blog. It is called TEAL: Typo Eradication Advancement League. What a great idea for a blog! What a great idea for a life calling, lol!

These guys have decided that their lot in life is to go about reporting on, and in some cases, correcting public typos. This often involves the whiting out or adding various types of punctuation, mainly apostrophes. Things like "New's Paper's Only" are surreptitiously corrected in the dark of night using some white tape to become "News Papers Only".

One incident reported on the blog took place in Middletown, PA where various students' names were "corrected" by a computer spell check by the company hired to print the year book. Max Zupanovic became Max Supernova. Kathy Carbaugh became Kathy Airbag, and Alessandra Ippolito became Alexandria Impolite. Taylor Publishing, although declaring that they are taking full responsibility, said, "It happens all the time, every year."

Perhaps that shouldn't be the case in a company that gets its revenue from WORDS!

An Orthodox Morning and Evening Prayer

A Prayer of the Optina Elders

O Lord, grant me strength to meet with spiritual tranquility everything forthcoming today. Grant me to submit completely to Thy holy will. At every hour of this day guide and support me in all things.

Whatsoever news may reach me in the course of this day, teach me to accept it with a calm soul and the firm conviction that all is subject to Thy holy will.

Direct my thoughts and feelings--in all my words and actions . In all unexpected occurances, do not let me forget that all is sent down from Thee.

Teach me to deal straightforwardly and wisely with every member of my family, neither embarrassing nor saddening anyone.

O Lord, grant me strength to endure the fatigue of the coming day and all the events that take place during it. Direct my will and teach me to pray, to believe, to hope, to be patient, to forgive and to love.

~Amen.

Evening Prayer

O Lord our God, as Thou art good and the Lover of mankind, forgive me wherein I have sinned today in word, deed and thought.

Grant me peaceful and undisturbed sleep; send Thy guardian angel to protect and keep me from all evil. For Thou art the Guardian of our souls and bodies, and unto Thee do we send up glory: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.

~Amen.

Socially Acceptable Rodentia

There is an ill-fated chipmunk loose in my house.

My cat chased it around for a while and lost interest.

Now, my dog has decided that it needs to be eliminated at all costs. Since I am sitting here in a soft leg-cast (see previous post) and can't safely hobble about to interfere, I must instead simply watch.

Poor thing. If it were something less socially acceptable, I wouldn't be rooting for the rodent.

Red Espresso

As the part owner of a new coffee/espresso machine (This year's Father's Day gift) I've become aware of a whole new category of drinks: red TEA espresso. Mmmmmmm!!!!! My son has been kind enough to make me a "Fresh Red" drink: white cranberry juice topped with espresso made with red rooibus tea over ice topped with mint. Mmmmmmmm! For this and other wonderful hot and cold red espresso drink recipes, go to redespresso.com.

Enjoy!

Public Service Announcement

For your edification, I give you the following public service announcement: Cleaning is hazardous to one's health.

The lovely wrapped cast I now have on my left leg is there because I had the hubris and audacity to try to sweep up my sun room after killing a number of large ants.

I broke my leg trying to kill ants!!

I do like the nice aluminum crutches they gave me, though. Very modern looking. Definitely better and more comfortable than my old wooden ones.

Rest in Peace, Jim McKay

Jim McKay, announcer for Wide World of Sports, died on Saturday at the age of 86. He was buried on Tuesday from the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore, where my sister, niece and I graduated from High School.

In 1972, Jim McKay was on the air during the Olympics when Palestinian terrorists broke into the Olympic Village and took eleven Israeli athletes hostage. All 11 hostages were killed when a Palestinian threw a grenade into the helicopter that was carrying the hostages.

With the clear hindsight that occurs with time, many now look back to that tragedy as the first time that global terrorism came onto the radar screens of most Americans.

Jim McKay had the sad job of announcing this news to the world. May he rest in peace.

Rest in Peace, Jim McKay.

Thank God for Orthotics

Apparently I have flat feet. I *know* I have bunions that were becoming almost crippling. After a hard days dashing up and down the stairs, I can hardly walk.

I decided to buy some OTC orthotics. I now am the proud owner of 2 different types. The first type is the soft kind and the second type is the harder plastic that is pictured. They made a huge difference.

Sometimes we must bow to the inevitable.

Mary, Called Magdalene, Book Review

Mary, Called Magdalene Mary, Called Magdalene by Margaret George

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
While this is a fascinating book in terms of the historical details of daily life in the first century, I have to disagree with the review in Publisher's Weekly which states that it "imagines nothing seriously objectionable to even the most devout Christians." That isn't true if one counts Catholics as "devout Christians".

First of all, the book's portrayal of Mary, the Mother of Jesus is problematic for Catholics. It portrays her as joining Jesus' siblings (another problematic interpretation) in doubting Jesus when he begins his mission, only joining the Apostles later.

The other disturbing thing is that Jesus doesn't seem to know he is the Messiah until right before he goes to Jerusalem for the final time. The book seems to go out of its way to portray Jesus as very much "only human". There is no sense that He is the second person of the Blessed Trinity here at all.

I will update this when I get to the end of the book. I'm wondering how or if the Resurrection will be portrayed.

Update: While the post-resurrection portion was decidedly supernatural (as opposed to walking the line between Jesus as a weird-but-good man and something "more") the entire book was an odd marriage of Fundamentalism and Feminism. Mary Magdalene is portrayed throughout the story as equal to (and in some ways a bit above and apart from) the (male) Apostles. Also, the author seems to make a point of having the Mary Magdalene discuss whether or not Peter has primacy over the other Apostles(one can perhaps guess the answer here)and there is a point near the end where it is declared that the Church "has no doctrine."

So, while the book is intriguing, it is in no way in line with historical Christianity as expressed by the Catholic Church.
