What *is* Christmas music, hmmm? Is it, Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer? Is it Elvis singing some sappy Christmas tune? Not in my opinion.
I just purchased Sirius Satellite radio, mainly for EWTN. Then I learn that there is a seasonal station which will play Christmas music. Also, there is a station that purports to play vocal music. Forget it!! The Christmas station plays Pop Christmas drivel that I can't listen to for more than 2 minutes per Christmas season. The classical vocal station plays mainly opera. Sorry, my level of appreciation for both seasonal pop music, and opera just isn't registering on the meter.
Where is the *real* Christmas music? Where are the choirs singing carols!?!?!?
Oh well, I guess I have to stick to my record and CD collection for Christmas.

4HC, it seems the world tries to drown out the "real" Christmas music with these pop ditties, the same efforts they are making to remove Christ from Christmas. Let's keep our greetings to Merry Christmas and stick to the "O" Antiphons and to Silent Night Holy Night and to Handel's Messiah. Do you have a favorite Christmas CD that you can recommend?
ReplyDeleteEWTN HAS A CHANNEL ON SIRIUS??
ReplyDeleteIs it all music, or all programs like on the TV network, or some of both, or what? Does it feature a radio version of "The Journey Home?"
WOW! Tell us more!
I'm a sucker for all Christmas music. I like it all, and I listen to it nonstop from Thanksgiving to Christmas. But my favorites are the hymns. Especially "O Holy Night" and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear." In fact, I made myself a Christmas CD for my car that has three versions of "O Holy Night" on it. I can't get enough of that song. I wish I had a good singing voice just so I could sing it.
ReplyDeleteSt. Pete--I agree--its trying to take the Christ out of Christmas. Maybe that's why I hate that stuff so much.
ReplyDeleteDarrell--Yes, EWTN is on Sirius. Its channel 160, I think. (I have it preset). Right now they play basically what is on the television station, but I hear that they are planning on doing programming specific to radio.
Wendy--It took me years as a kid to realize that Oh Holy Night was a Christmas song! My mom used to sing it around the house so much, I never realized it!
One of my favorites is Lo How a Rose 'Ere Blooming.
Try working in retail! To keep us from losing our 'sanity' our December fare has four different versions of Let It Snow, versions of Santa Claus is Coming to Town in French and English, Jingle Bells in Spanish, three versions of the "whiskers on kittens" song from The Sound of Music and a copy of "Santa Baby, Hurry Down My Chimney Tonight."
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to have found that Trans Siberian Orchestra does Christmas music without ignoring such greats as "The Holly and the Ivy"
I worked retail in college--you have my sympathies!! I can hardly stand to *shop* this time of year, much less work in retail!
