Personal retreats--what do you do?

Sometimes the stress of daily life can get to us. It is in times like these when we need to consciously turn to God, but we may not have the resources to physically get away to an organized retreat.

When I feel the need to become more in tune with the Presence of God, I burn incense, play CDs of Sacred Choral works and read the prayers of the Day from Magnificat Magazine. It really helps remind me that there is a life beyond this earthly one and that God is there to lean on. It helps get things into perspective.

What do you do during your personal retreat times? What helps you feel closer to God?

  1. "Personal retreats" as you call them (I like the name) are very important in this very hectic world in which we live. For me, I listen to music with headphones on (blocks out the worldly noise) and light a scented candle (lavender or lilac are my favorite). I also write, and write, and write. One of my favorites, though, is chatting with dear friends. It really keeps me connected and gets me through the tough times.

  2. I try to visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and pour my heart out, then listen to sacred silence. At times, I listen to classical music, preferably sacred music. Journal writing and spiritual reading also help rekindle the fire within whenever it's seems ready to burn out.

  3. I agree, Lifeisgreat. These personal retreats (or retreats of any kind, really) are very important in today's world.

Important, as St. Peter's Helper's says, to rekindle the fire.

  4. The Jesus prayer is my favorite. I can say it anytime, anywhere. Especially at work I'll close my eyes for a few moments, breathe deeply and recite it. Centering prayer twice a day really helps. And finally as others mentioned, silence is very strengthening.

  5. Oh, I love that idea--saying the Jesus prayer wherever you are in the middle of a work day. I'll have to remember that.

  6. I try to find a quiet place where no one can disturb me to read the bible and worship God through songs and prayer. I sense His divine presence when I worship Him and that makes all the difference to me.
