My Favorite Latin and English Hymns

Dymphna's Road has a nice, short music meme, which I've managed to make into an hours-long research project! It asks you to list your favorite Latin and English hymns. Where possible, I've included links to the actual song for those who are curious about some of the pieces. You may have to find the link once you get to the page.


Favorite Latin Hymns

Ave Maria--Gounod [I sing this one often, at weddings, and, once at a funeral.]

Adeste Fideles

Pange Lingua/Tantum Ergo

Gloria by John Rutter [This is worth listening to, IMO. Click on the link and then click on the second blue button--under "John Rutter--Gloria III." I sang this in my first year in college. What a privilege! It is sad that I learned more liturgical Latin in a public--very NON-Catholic--college than anywhere else.]

Ave Verum Corpus Sang this one in College as well.

Tu Es Petrus [Our college choir sang this song during the Mass that John Paul II had in the Mall in Washington in October of 1979.]

Hodie Christus Natus Est (You may have to scroll down to track 4--"Procession". It starts very softly.)

A Video for the 4th

In searching YouTube for an appropriate video to put up for the 4th, this one touched me the most. It is a film of the Queen's Guards outside Buckingham Palace, ordered to play the United States National Anthem, the day after 9/11, to show the country's sympathy with America, and to comfort the many U.S. citizens who had congregated outside of the palace gates after learning their flights home were cancelled. I think this is especially moving in light of the recent terror attacks in the U.K.

July is the Month of the Precious Blood

Today is July 1. Last night I bought a Maryknoll Missal from 1965 from my parish's "Attic Treasures" sale. In it, I learned that, in the old calendar, July first was the Feast of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Here is what the missal says about the feast:

This feast was instituted for and celebrated by the Society of the Precious Blood, an Italian missionary institute, in the early 19th century. In 1849 Pope Pius IX extended the feast to the entire church. But devotion to the Precious Blood is as old as Christianity. The early Fathers say that the Church was born from the pierced side of Christ, and that the sacraments were brought forth through His Blood. It is a symbol of mankind's redemption. But we, too, must share in suffering; as St. Paul tells Timothy, "All who want to live a life of piety in Christ Jesus will have to suffer persecution." (II Timothy 2:12)

Wanted to highlight ds' music page on Myspace. So far I only see one song on there. He produced the song (and did all the instrumentals and vocals) himself on his laptop. When you hear it, you will instantly know what music group has had the most influence on him to date.
