Check out this great music! :)

Wanted to highlight ds' music page on Myspace. So far I only see one song on there. He produced the song (and did all the instrumentals and vocals) himself on his laptop. When you hear it, you will instantly know what music group has had the most influence on him to date.

Edited to fix url!

Driving while old

Drove the '61 bug today. I have to constantly remind myself that it is NOT a "modern" car. I had a terrible time trying to remember to turn off the turn signal--no, it wouldn't go off by itself.

I envisioned myself "driving while old" with sticky notes all over the windshield saying "TURN OFF THE TURN SIGNAL"! Now I realize why we didn't have things such as cupholders and music players in cars back then--all one's concentration had to be on driving the car!

Putting on the Ritz

Continuing my YouTube kick today.

I discovered this vid of "Putting on the Ritz". According to the person who posted it on YouTube, it is " 'Putting on the Ritz' by Taco dubbed over the music video "Weapon of Choice" by Fatboy Slim." It fits.

Reminds me of a combination of a '40's movie and weird dreams I've had. Ok, maybe not *that* weird.

Ok, here's the same version of the same song, only this time, they've put it with a Fred Astaire vid with it. It looks like they fade in the original music at the end of the video. BTW, this second video has a link to the original video they used, as well as the song for those of you dying to research this further.

I'm on YouTube!

Well, my poetry is on YouTube. I don't think I would EVER put my face on YouTube! I've spent the last 24 hours putting some of my poetry on PowerPoint, researching the various methods with which to "translate" the PowerPoint to a movie, (yeah, I found out the hard way, you can't just upload PowerPoint to YouTube) putting sound to the movie, and, finally, uploading it to YouTube. The quality is not as good as I would like, but its certainly a start.

The Zimmers

The band: The Zimmers.
Combined age: 3000
Lead Singer: 90
Hit single : My Generation
Originally Recorder at: Abbey Roads Studio (yeah, *that* Abbey Roads)

They Rock!

I've also discovered that Peter Oakley, perhaps better known as Youtuber, Geriatric1927 , was also a member of the group. Below is his announcement of the release of the single, profits from which go to Age Concern charity in the U.K.

Peter explains, "We have a voice that we want to put out there to say that we are old but we are here; We have much to contribute to society."

Here is Peter's take on the whole experience:

Saint Thomas More

Today is the Feast of Saint Thomas More--the Tudor era Lord Chancellor of England who refused to recognize King Henry VIII as head of the Church of England when he broke from the Catholic Church. Thomas More was convicted of treason and beheaded on July 6, 1535.

He told the crowd that had gathered to witness his execution that he was "the King's good servant-but God's first."

Do we have the same conviction and bravery as he did? It may one day be asked of us. These are days in which the Church is being persecuted and prosecuted even in western countries for "hate speech" merely for continuing to hold to its centuries-old teachings.

Cygnus tagged me with this 8 random things meme.

8 Random Things About Me

1. I was an Episcopalian for 10 years.
2. I am related to Robert Fulton (the guy who invented the steam boat).
3. I am related to Charlemagne. (Yeah, my aunt's genealogy research is worth 2 "random things!")
4. I am a cantor at Mass.
5. I can curl my tongue.
6. When I was little, I wanted to be a nun to avoid ever needing to use any math in life.
7. For quite a number of years, I had no clothes dryer.
8. I have no dishwasher now.

I tag Carmel, AutumnRose and anyone else who wants to do it.

What's this called?

Since it's hot today, I thought I would post this picture and ask you all a question.
1. What is this summer treat called?

2. And, where are you from? (I'm trying to test a theory about the regional variations on the name of this yummy treat.)

3. Also, what is your favorite flavor?

Saint Francis and the Divinity of Christ

While visiting Assisi recently, Pope Benedict XVI warned against viewing Saints of the Church, and even Christ, as "good people" alone. Saint Francis was not a mere environmentalist. Many people today, he said, "accept a diminished Christ, admired in His extraordinary humanity but rejected in the profound mystery of His divinity." To do this, misses the point of the heroic lives the saints led, and of the very sacrifice of Christ.

Saint Francis, and his female counterpart, Saint Claire, were deeply rooted in the divinity of Christ and His Passion, and did not see Christ as a "good person" alone. Francis was the first recorded saint to have recieved the stigmata--the 5 wounds of Christ--in his own body.

Francis of Assisi was, indeed, a radical--a revolutionary. When his father took him before the bishop for giving away the father's money and goods to the poor, Francis gave his father the very clothes on his back, and went away naked. Francis was a radical reformer--not outside the Church, but within it. Someone once asked him about the validity of a Mass said by a priest who was living with a woman. Francis went to that priest and kissed his hands, because they held Christ. It is that kind of radical reverence for the Real Presence that is the heart of the Church.

Viewing Christ in His Divinity demands that we follow His teachings. Seeing Christ as only an "enlightened person" demands nothing of us but admiration.

Happy Father's Day

Today we remember our fathers, living and deceased.

Saint Joseph was a conscientious protector and father-figure to Our Lord, so it is fitting that we remember him also on this day.

Remember, too, we all have a Heavenly Father who loves us.

Myths of Vatican II

There's a great thread over in the Catholic Answers Forum about things that Vatican II did NOT call for, contrary to all popular opinion otherwise. I wanted to list some of those things here.

In spite of what you may have been told, once upon a time, Vatican II did NOT call for
  • The Mass entirely in the vernacular language (eg, English)
  • Doing away with Latin in the Mass
  • Doing away with Gregorian Chant
  • Doing away with Organ music at Mass
  • Doing away with communion on the tongue
  • Doing away with women wearing head coverings in Church
  • Removal of altar rails
  • Priests saying Mass facing the people
  • Not doing penance on Fridays
  • Not needing to confess serious sins before receiving communion
  • Doing away with "archaic" practices such as saying the Rosary
In fact, for the first three items on our list, the exact opposite was called for in Vatican II documents:
In Masses which are celebrated with the people, a suitable place may be allotted to their mother tongue. Nevertheless steps should be taken so that the faithful may also be able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass.
~Sacrosanctum Concilium, Paragraph 54

The musical tradition of the Universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The Church acknowledges Gregorian Chant as specially suited to the Roman Liturgy. Therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services.
~Ibid, Paragraph 112 & 114

It looks like the fox has taken over the hen house, folks. At least for the past, oh, 40+ years or so. It makes me sad that most seminarians today are not required to study Latin. Hopefully, if the pope issues the expected motu proprio, allowing priests to say the Mass in Latin without needing specific permission from the local bishop, this will change. After all, Our Lord did promise that
That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Matthew 16:18

Another Photo

I'm becoming sort of nuts with my camera phone. This is a picture of my husband's '61 VW bug. It took me a while to get used to the two-tone color scheme, but when I remembered that it is the same color(s) as the old '66 bus he had when I first met him, I started liking it a lot.

Emmaus

It's time I post a little about Emmaus, where my son is currently living. Named for the city in the bible where the apostles met Our Lord after he was raised from the dead, it is a much-needed drug and alcohol-free music venue/coffee house run by some very enterprising local Gettysburg young people.

They are renting a building that used to be an Elk's lodge-complete with a 2 lane bowling alley in the basement (sorry--no duck pins, though!). The guys live dorm-style upstairs and they have concerts, open mic nights and bowling nights, along with the Thrift Shop to raise money.

This endeavor they have taken on is a very worthy cause, and they are in the process of getting 501-c3 tax exempt status.

So, if you are interested in music, free trade coffee, very inexpensive clothes and other items, or old fashioned bowling, make a point to drop by next time you are in Gettysburg.

Stop by the Emmaus website and donate through Pay Pal, or just have a look around.

Discerning private revelation

Father Corapi talked today about how to discern whether or not a private revelation is legitimate. There are two types of private revelation--those that are true and those that are false. Private revelations are NOT part of the deposit of the faith. They do not have to be believed. But they do exist. There are private revelations that have been approved by the Church, as true. An example of this are Our Lady's appearances at Lourdes, Guadalupe and at Fatima.

Father Corapi went over two important ways to discern if a so-called private revelation is legitimate.

1. You will see in the visionary humility resulting in obedience to legitimate Church authority, even when that authority seems to be persecuting the visionary. Throughout the ages, true visionaries have immediately and humbly obeyed all orders from their bishops to cease publicizing their visions. True visionaries often (perhaps always) give the contents of their visions over to their superiors, confessors and/or their bishops before making them public.

2. Nothing in the revelation is contrary to the Faith. A true visionary will not receive "revelations" that give a "new" teaching contrary to the Faith we have been given from the apostles. A legitimate vision will not tell us that there is no such thing as the Holy Trinity, for example, or that the Holy Eucharist is just a symbol.

If unapproved apparitions are not (necessarily) to be trusted, what are we to follow? Approved revelation. Tradition and Scripture. The term "Oral Tradition" comes from the Latin word "ora" which means "prayer". The way the Church prays comes from Oral Tradition. The Holy Mass can be seen not only in the writings of the early Church Fathers, going back to 40 years after the death of the last apostle, but also in Holy Scriptures.

At once I was caught up in spirit. A throne was there in heaven, and on the throne sat one whose appearance sparkled like jasper and carnelian. Around the throne was a halo as brilliant as an emerald.

Surrounding the throne I saw twenty-four other thrones on which twenty-four elders sat, dressed in white garments and with gold crowns on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder. Seven flaming torches burned in front of the throne, which are the seven spirits of God.

In front of the throne was something that resembled a sea of glass like crystal. In the center and around the throne, there were four living creatures covered with eyes in front and in back. The first creature resembled a lion, the second was like a calf, the third had a face like that of a human being, and the fourth looked like an eagle in flight.

The four living creatures, each of them with six wings, 8 were covered with eyes inside and out. Day and night they do not stop exclaiming: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come.
~From The Book of Revelation, chapters 4 and 5

I have no taste for the food that perishes nor for the pleasures of this life. I want the Bread of God which is the Flesh of Christ, who was the seed of David; and for drink I desire His Blood which is love that cannot be destroyed.

Take care, then who belong to God and to Jesus Christ - they are with the bishop. Take care, then, to use one Eucharist, so that whatever you do, you do according to God: for there is one Flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ, and one cup in the union of His Blood; one altar, as there is one bishop with the presbytery and my fellow servants, the deacons.

~Saint Ignatius of Antioch 80-110 A.D.

This food we call the Eucharist, of which no one is allowed to partake except one who believes that the things we teach are true, and has received the washing for forgiveness of sins and for rebirth, and who lives as Christ handed down to us. For we do not receive these things as common bread or common drink; but as Jesus Christ our Savior...

~Saint Justin Martyr 148-155 A.D.

Summer Time Reading

I wanted to continue to encourage all of you out there to take part in the Catholic Summer Reading Program hosted by Aquinas and More. I went to my local Catholic bookstore to purchase my long-awaited favorite on the list, Those Terrible Middle Ages.

Well, they had sold out, so I ended up buying a book that is on the top 64 finalist list from the reading program--Lay Siege to Heaven, a novel about Saint Catherine of Siena. It looks excellent, and I will update you as I read it.

Another "must-have" book on the list is Grunt Padre, a book about a Marine Corps chaplain during the Vietnam War. DH, who really loves to read about the Vietnam era, would really like this book, I think.

So, check out the Summer Reading Program and get involved!

Catholic Summer Reading Program

Catholic Summer Reading LogoI am so excited!! Aquinas and More Catholic Goods is sponsoring a Catholic Summer Reading Program!! Finally, a way to review, read and discuss Catholic books, both fiction and non-fiction, that we may not have even known existed.

There are some excellent, readable Catholic books out there and now we have a source that lists the best in one place. Whatever your taste in books, Aquinas has a book for you.

The eight books in the program are here at the Catholic Summer Reading Program and include Another Sort of Learning which is a compilation of essays about real learning, A Canticle for Leibowitz, written in the 20th century and set in the post-apocolyptic future, Cosmos or the Love of God, a book about a man's difficult journey in discerning his religious calling, an extensively footnoted edition of G.K. Chesterton's A Man Who Was Thursday, Mr. Blue, a novel written in 1928 which features a modern day St. Francis figure, Strangers and Sojourners, part one of a trilogy, a popular epic novel that follows a family through the generations, Swimming with Scapulars, an honest look at a thirtysomething man's attempt at living his Catholic faith, and the book I am really looking forward to reading, Those Terrible Middle Ages! which promises to debunk all those myths about the Middle Ages being a time of drunken clergy and wonderful witches.

Aquinas has a forum for discussing the books online as well.

I can't wait!

You Are My God

This is a great video on the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Seeing all these "young people" in adoration makes me realize what my generation missed.

The Power is in the Eucharist

Today is the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Lord. This is something that is unique to the Catholic (and Orthodox) Churches--Being able to take within ourselves, the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord.

Traditionally, today is a day for Eucharistic procession throughout our streets and neighborhoods. I know this is done much more often than it was 30-40 years ago, but the need is still great. Sadly, there are whole generations of Catholics who grew up never seeing a Eucharistic procession, or even Eucharistic Adoration. As Catholics, many of us were (and are) being deprived of our spiritual heritage.

Below is a video called "Jesus in New York" that shows a Eucharistic Procession in the streets of New York.

The Holy Eucharist--the True Power!

Cacti

This amazed me when I first moved up here.

This cactus is from our yard.

We live in Pennsylvania.

That's NORTH of the Mason-Dixon line.

And we have cacti that thrive on our hill and live through the winter.

Busy 24 hours

It's been busy this last 24 hours. Last night, ds began the process of moving into Emmaus--a coffee house/music venue/thrift shop that is run by some local young people. They had an opening in their dorm-style housing and ds is going for it. Exciting stuff!

DH just called. He was on his way across the street at work when he was attacked by a....are you ready for it....?....a HUMMINGBIRD. Really. He ran and popped out his leg. He is on his way home now. Gotta watch out for those killer hummingbirds!

Someone in Maryland has obviously been reading this book!!!Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPhoto Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

My Britcoms

I've compiled a list of my Britcoms--the BBC comedies I've seen here in the U.S. Unfortunately, I don't get tv at the moment, so I'm going through withdrawal. But, even at its best, I don't get *all* these shows at once, anyway. I have to take what I am given. I think some DVD purchases are definitely in order.
